How to Move From iPhone to Android Without Losing Chats
Moving from an iPhone to an Android phone is easier than it used to be, but messages are handled by several different services. WhatsApp, iMessage, SMS, Messenger and Signal each have their own transfer rules, so one backup cannot preserve everything.
The safest approach is to prepare both phones, transfer data with a cable where possible, and keep the iPhone untouched until your important conversations appear on the Android handset. This matters whether you are switching to a Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, Motorola or another Android model.
Australian users should also consider how their mobile number and messaging services work with local networks. Telstra, Optus and Vodafone support SMS and increasingly widespread RCS messaging, but iMessage can continue intercepting texts if it remains active on your old iPhone.
A little preparation before visiting a JB Hi-Fi, Officeworks or carrier shop can prevent missing chats, photos and verification codes. Keep both phones charged, use reliable Wi-Fi and allow plenty of time for WhatsApp and media transfers.
Check Your Chats Before Switching
Make a list of the messaging apps you use and identify where each conversation is stored. WhatsApp uses its own encrypted backup and transfer system, while iMessage is connected to Apple devices and iCloud. Messenger and Telegram usually store conversations in the cloud, so signing in may be enough.
Open the latest conversations on the iPhone and check that photos, videos, voice messages and group chats are present. If an app has a backup option, run it manually. Do not rely only on an old iCloud backup, because Android cannot restore an iMessage backup directly.
Transfer Data With A Cable
Most new Android phones include a setup tool that can copy contacts, calendars, photos, videos, SMS messages and some app data from an iPhone. A USB-C-to-Lightning cable is generally faster and more dependable than wireless transfer, especially if your camera roll is large.
During Android setup, choose the option to copy data from an iPhone and follow the instructions on screen. You may need to unlock the iPhone, tap Trust and sign in to your Google account. Google’s Android Switch process and Samsung Smart Switch may show slightly different menus, but the general process is similar.
Move WhatsApp Chats And Media
WhatsApp supports transferring chat history from iPhone to Android on compatible devices. Usually, you need the same phone number on both phones, the latest WhatsApp version, a cable connecting the devices and an Android phone that has been reset or is still in its initial setup stage.
On Android, install WhatsApp and verify the same number. Scan the QR code shown during setup with the iPhone, then follow the transfer prompts. Your individual chats, group conversations, account details and much of your media should move across. Some payment history, call history and peer-to-peer content may not transfer.
Do not delete WhatsApp from the iPhone until the Android app has finished restoring and you have opened several important chats. If you are changing your Australian mobile number as well as your phone, use WhatsApp’s Change Number feature first, while the account is still active.
Turn Off IMessage And FaceTime
Before removing the SIM or eSIM from the iPhone, disable iMessage and FaceTime. Go to Settings, open Messages and switch off iMessage. Then open FaceTime and turn it off too. This releases your number from Apple’s messaging system.
If you have already moved the SIM and messages from iPhone users are missing, deregister your number from Apple’s iMessage service online. This is particularly important when friends or family in Sydney, Melbourne or regional areas send messages from Apple devices. They may see a blue message bubble while your Android phone waits for an SMS that never arrives.
Handle SMS, RCS And Group Messages
The Android setup transfer can copy ordinary SMS and MMS messages, but it cannot turn old blue iMessage conversations into fully functioning iMessage threads. They will generally appear as SMS or MMS on Android, with some limitations around reactions, attachments and group behaviour.
After setup, open Google Messages and enable chat features if RCS is available. RCS can provide typing indicators, read receipts and higher-quality media with compatible users, although support depends on the recipient, device and network. Australian carrier support can vary, so a group may fall back to SMS.
Restore Cloud-Based Messaging Apps
For Facebook Messenger, install the Android app and sign in with the same Facebook account. Your conversations should synchronise from Meta’s servers. Telegram works similarly because most standard chats are cloud-based, although Secret Chats are tied to the original device and do not move in the usual way.
Signal requires extra care because its messages are designed to remain private and local. Use Signal’s official transfer process if it is offered for your two devices and keep both phones nearby. Do not assume that a Google backup or iCloud backup contains readable Signal conversations.
Use This Final Transfer Checklist
Before wiping or selling the iPhone, check these items:
- WhatsApp chats, photos and group conversations
- Important SMS and MMS threads
- Messenger, Telegram and Signal conversations
- Verification codes and two-factor authentication apps
Then test the Android phone with a trusted contact:
- Send and receive an SMS
- Receive a WhatsApp message
- Open a transferred photo or video
- Confirm calls, contacts and voicemail
Keep the old iPhone switched on for several days if possible. Some apps may request a fresh login, and banking services used by Australians, including CommBank, ANZ and NAB, may require device verification. Once your chats and accounts work properly, sign out of Apple ID, remove the SIM or eSIM, erase the iPhone and complete the handover or sale.
